Rules for Intermediate Summer Soccer 2019:

In-game rules
  • Players are expected to be wearing appropriate soccer cleats (no barefoot).
  • NO SLIDE TACKLES ARE PERMITTED. Players can't play the ball if they are on the ground unless they are saving the ball from going out of bounds without players in the near vicinity. Goaltenders, however, can play the ball on the ground.
  • GAMES ARE SELF-OFFICIATED THIS SEASON SO PLEASE (A) KEEP THE GAMEPLAY CLEAN WHEREVER POSSIBLE AND (B) BE MINDFUL OF THE SORTS OF FOULS YOU CALL.
  • THERE IS NO OFFSIDE RULE. However, "cherry-picking" is strongly discouraged and considered unsportsmanlike behaviour. Captains are encouraged to discuss incidents of consistent "cherry-picking" and players should be warned that CONSISTENT "CHERRY-PICKING" WILL RESULT IN GAME SUSPENSIONS THIS SEASON.
  • ALL FREE KICKS ARE INDIRECT. Players must give the free kick taker room to play. This rule also applies for kick-ins.
  • CO-ED RULE: Each team must have at least 2 females and males on the field at all times. Otherwise, the team must play down a player and the other team will receive a GOAL ADVANTAGE OF TWO GOALS. ALL PLAYERS ARE EXPECTED TO BE INCLUDED IN GAMEPLAY!
  • No throw-ins. Everything is kicked in. Players may not score directly from a kick in.
  • All subbing done on the fly. Teams are not required to wait for subbing to occur to continue play.
  • If it is not clear who the ball went off of, the decision will favour the defending side.

Game format and game length:
  • Please arrive AT LEAST 20-30 minutes early to ensure games can start on time- otherwise, the games will have to be cut short.
  • Teams will have a 60 minute timeslot for gameplay and if players show up on time, the games can consist of two 25-minute halves with a 5 minute half time. Otherwise, games will have to be shortened with the discretion of the captains.
  • Games must start and end on time and any team unable to field an eligible team (at least 4 players) within the first TEN minutes will forfeit the match. All forfeits count as a 5-0 loss. Any team with two forfeits will not be eligible for the playoffs.
  • Games are 7-aside (6 players and a goaltender).
  • All teams (both winning and losing) must report the game scores within 48 hours or the game may be recorded as a 0-0 draw.

Subs (Players from outside the league):.
  • We do not typically use subs! However, subs to meet the coed rules minimum requirement cannot be denied by opposing captains. Otherwise, all players must be included on the league rosters prior to gameplay.
  • Subs may not be used in the playoffs.

The spirit of the rules is above all to: Have fun and be safe, treat all players with dignity and respect, and keep competition secondary to having a good time. Gross unsportsmanlike conduct, such as the utterance of racial, religious or sexist slurs, the instigation of fights, or conducting illegal activity in facilities rented by the league can result in suspension or expulsion from our league with no refund, at the discretion of league executives and the Halifax PLAYS Board.

We also encourage players to contact halifaxplays.soccer@gmail.com with suggestions for how rules can be further amended and improved.
In fact, almost all our rules have at some point been made with the consultation and/ or voting approval of former players and captains.
